Tampa Bay Buccaneers Plans For Exposed Defensive Spot

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers haven’t started their season yet, but they have already dealt with injuries. The Buccaneers have placed running back Chase Edmond, wide receiver Rakim Jarrett, offensive linemen Silas Dzansi and Sua Opeta, and defensive lineman Earnest Brown IV on IR. The Bucs also have two questionable players for Sunday’s season home opener with the Washington Commanders wide receiver Trey Palmer and defensive lineman Calijah Kancey.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers roster is defensive-heavy with 27 players; some positions have up to six players. Even with having the extra players on defense, the Bucs have one position that is a little thin now after Friday’s announcement. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are still in the mix of trying to place the right personnel in the position before Sunday’s game.

    Logan Hall

Defensive lineman Logan Hall cannot play in the game against the Commanders. Hall, who has been with the Buccaneers for three seasons, will have to sit out due to a foot injury he suffered during practice last week. Hall was drafted in 2022 in the second round of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 33rd pick. Last season, the defensive end had 22 total tackles, 11 solo, 11 assisted tackles, and two fumble recoveries.

Logan Hall and William Gholston competed for the starting spot at defensive end during training camp. Even with Gholston in the lineup, the Buccaneers would still be two men short at the position on the right side. How will the Tampa Bay Buccaneers adjust the roster to accommodate their loss at the position?

    Next Man Up

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will have Wiliam Gholston and a recent pickup from the Arizona Cardinals practice squad, Ben Stille. Stille hasn’t had any real practice time with the Bucs defense, and if he were put out on the field Sunday, the expectations of how he would perform wouldn’t be that great. Head Coach Todd Bowles of the Bucs explained his thoughts on the new defensive player on the team’s website,

He’s tough, we know that. We’ve seen him on tape. He’s tough, he’s a good run stopper, he’s very strong that way. I didn’t get to see much of him in person in practice because he just got here, so we’ll see how much he can learn before Sunday.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have two defensive linemen on the practice squad, C.J. Brewer and Mike Greene. Whoever the Bucs place in the vacant defensive end spot will have to be up to the task against the Washington Commanders and their rookie quarterback, Jayden Daniels; the Bucs’ theme will be applying pressure to the quarterback to make mistakes.

    Final Thoughts

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have selected many undrafted players in the past four seasons. Maybe the Buccaneers have a gold coin in their chest that can come in and be a defensive force for them. They already have nine rookies on the main roster, so what’s one more? Or will the Commanders expose the Buc’s weakness and create an upset?
