Slippery Field In Brazil Was A Challenge for Eagles, Packers

The NFL kicked off their first international game Friday night in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The Eagles and Packers found the field conditions difficult to play on. Several players on both sides for the Eagles and Packers found themselves slipping during plays. Also at the end of the game, Packers QB Jordan Love exited the game due to a suspected leg injury.

Slippery Field In Brazil for Eagles, Packers Game

During Friday night's game between the Eagles and Packers, field conditions were not up to par for the game. The surface was very slick at Arena Corinthians, which is normally a soccer stadium. Players from both teams were losing their footing throughout the game.

Philadelphia Eagles Tight End Dallas Goedert compared it to the field when the Eagles played the Chiefs in Arizona for Super Bowl LVII. Also, Eagles Quarterback Jalen Hurts commented about the field saying "Definitely challenging on that field. It's not the type of field we are used to playing on. I'm just happy that we found a way to figure it out as a team, overcome it."

Eagles Running Back Saquon Barkley lost his footing resulting in a five-yard loss on his first carry of the game. After the series, he went to the sideline and changed cleats to a seven-stud cleat. The Packers were feeling the effects as well. Head Coach Matt LaFleur told reporters "It's been a problem for sure." Packers Safety Xavier McKinney said "it was a little slippery. Different than what I'm kind of used to playing on."

Final Thoughts

The Philadelphia Eagles came away with the 34-29 win in Brazil despite having poor field conditions at Arena Corinthians stadium. This stadium is used for soccer games and has held major soccer events throughout the years. Other athletes took to X (Twitter) such as LeBron James and J.J. Watt commenting on how bad the field conditions were and that soccer fields are made for speed and agility.

The NFL will have more international games this season in London and Germany again and hopefully the field conditions will be better for those international games on the NFL schedule. The Philadelphia Eagles are 1-0 on the season and will take on the Atlanta Falcons and new Quarterback Kirk Cousins on Monday Night Football.

The Green Bay Packers are 0-1 and are concerned about their starting quarterback Love regarding his injury. They hope it is nothing serious that would cause him to miss the entire NFL season. It would be a huge loss for the Packers if Love ends up missing the season, or an extended period.
