Mephiles the Dark is a Great Game

Few Sonic villains have managed to cast a shadow as deep as Mephiles the Dark. This necromantic monster made his debut in the much-reviled Sonic 06. Sonic 06 has gone down as one of the most infamously bad games in the series. Despite the reputation of 06, Mephiles has made quite an impact on the fans. Many fans regard Mephiles the Dark as one of Sonic's 'darkest' enemies, particularly because he managed to kill the blue blur.

    Explaining Mephiles' Origin

Mephiles the Dark is the consciousness and will of 'Solaris'. Solaris is a mysterious divine entity from Soleanna. He was a pure white flame, guarded by Soleanna's royal family. The Duke of Soleanna, father of Princess Elise, initiated the Solaris Project for the betterment of mankind. The Duke believed that Solaris held great power, and could be used to manipulate time. The project became unstable, however, and the duke was killed in the explosion.

That day, Solaris was split into two separate entities; Iblis and Mephiles. Iblis represented Solaris' raw power and primal instinct. Iblis was sealed within Elise, and could only be released if the princess cried.

Mephiles represented Solaris' cunning intellect, and he was sealed away by a time-traveling Shadow the Hedgehog in a dark scepter. Mephiles' evil would not be contained, and the monster would be released during an altercation with Eggman. After his release, Mephiles the Dark took Shadow's appearance and began planning Iblis' release.

    Mephiles' Manipulations

What makes Mephiles different from other Sonic antagonists is his ruthless manipulation tactics. Mephiles plays a role in the plot's three main storylines, Sonic, Shadow, and Silver. Mephiles is most prevalent in Shadow's story, though. Mephiles plays on Shadow's initial disdain for humanity, by persuading them to join forces. Despite Mephiles' beliefs, Shadow is still willing to fight, even for a world that holds no regard for him.

Mephiles' manipulations do not stop with the ultimate lifeform, however. The dark shadow goes to the future to coax Silver and Blaze into fighting Sonic, making them believe he was the one who unleashed Iblis. This is especially important because Iblis' release creates the mass devastation in Silver's timeline.

Silver's desperation to save the future made him gullible to Mephiles' true manipulations. It drove much of the conflict for Sonic and Silver's stories, leading the two hedgehogs to clash. Eventually, the two settled their differences, and Silver realized that Sonic was not the Iblis Trigger.

The Death of Sonic the Hedgehog

Mephiles is the only character in the entire franchise, counting alternative media, to actually kill Sonic the Hedgehog. While Sonic and Elise are walking, Mephiles emerges from behind them. With just one gesture of his hand, he creates a light spear that impales Sonic, and he dies.

This sheer act of cruelty forces Elise to finally cry, and makes the dark figure let out a howl of triumphant laughter. Iblis finally emerges from within Elise, and Mephiles the Dark is able to rejoin with him once again.

Sonic for years has been a cocky, but loyal adventurer who fights evil. He is one of gaming's most iconic platform mascots, a title often held in contention with Mario the plumber. Sonic has braved multiple threats, going back to the wily Eggman and his machinations. We always know that whatever problem may come, Sonic will always best it. Mephiles' killing of Sonic stands out as one of the franchise's darkest moments, and an easy qualifier for Mephiles as one of the franchise's best villains.

Mephiles is Done, and That's Okay

Mephiles the Dark is an interesting addition to the Sonic franchise, and one that feels almost worth looking into. Most fans regard Mephiles as one of the franchise's more endearing one-off antagonists. He only has one appearance in the games, and he makes the most of it. Dan Green, Mephiles' voice actor, is known for also voicing Knuckles the Echidna, another series regular. His voice for Mephiles easily shows off the character's sophisticated aura, and sadism.

Despite Sonic 06's reputation, Mephiles the Dark is a villain worth seeing. He'd be a perfect threat to bring back, especially for Sonic X Shadow Generations. However, Mephiles stands out by being a one-off enemy with a great presence who doesn't need to be rehashed for later appearances.
