Sean Brady defeated Gilbert Burns via a unanimous decision at UFC Vegas 97 on September 7, 2024. The main event was between the welterweight division’s Gilbert Burns and Sean Brady. The second fight of the night, the co-main event, was in the women’s flyweight division where Jessica Andrade fought Natalia Silva. The UFC Vegas 97 card also included Steve Garcia against Kyle Nelson, and in the third fight, Matt Schnell against Cody Durden who battled as a replacement after only four days’ notice.
Sean Brady vs. Burns: Top Performance
In his first UFC main event, Sean Brady looked more versatile in his striking compared to his previous seven performances. With deadly top control, Brady was able to use his jab proficiently against Gilbert Burns, a former welterweight title contender. He also threw punches in combinations and scored takedowns, using domination on the ground at certain times during the UFC Fight Night main event.
The major problem for Burns was that he didn’t study the style and form of his opponent. He went straight into striking in a striking-style attack. But his striking led him into the deep ocean of grappling and that was the key reason for his loss. While his opponent Brady was very wise in this situation, leading him several times on the ground and trying to win by submission, Burns somehow managed to get out of difficulty. Yet at the end of the fight, Burns lost by decision because of his direct striking.
Co-Main Event: Natalia Silva Strikes
The co-main event of UFC Vegas 97 was a big moment for Natalia Silva as she was going to fight one of the greatest fighters in the UFC Women’s Division. Most importantly, if she won this fight, she would be in the Top 5 ranking for the title. So, she quickly turned that into reality and she was able to get the victory. However, this was arguably the most difficult fight of her UFC career, the 27-year-old rose in the event and put on a good defense against Andrade and showed her striking skills to the UFC Vegas co-main event.
As we know, unlike the winner of the main event, Silva has good striking ability and followed a striking-style fight plan. As a result, she depended on her speed, movement, and technique to score the victory and possibly achieve a knockout. But she wasn’t quite able to do that, and her victory against Andrade came through a unanimous decision.
Andrade also attempted to dominate the match by applying her methods, but that did not work so well. She tried to put pressure on her rival and utilize her grappling skills to force Silva to engage at close range. But was constantly met with Silva’s kicking game and versatility when attacking.
Final Thoughts
The winners of the UFC Vegas 97 main event and the co-main event proved that fighters can defend against the best, become top contenders for the title, and climb up the ladder. They showcase their victories beautifully by utilizing their special methods and tactics.
