When you think of the best beverage in North Carolina, Cheerwine probably tops the list.

Reader’s Digest did some research to identify the best beverages in every state, and unsurprisingly, North Carolina's beloved Cheerwine came out on top.

Known as the "Nectar of North Carolina," Cheerwine is a soda with a unique flavor that's often described as a mix between Cherry Cola and Dr. Pepper. For those who aren’t from the area, like me, discovering Cheerwine after moving here was a pleasant surprise.

There's no actual wine in it, but on a hot summer day, an ice-cold Cheerwine can be a refreshing pick-me-up. This sweet, fizzy drink has been a staple in North Carolina since 1917, and it’s clear that locals love to celebrate their homegrown treasure.
