As prices rise and wages stagnate, many Americans are relying on credit to make ends meet.

In North Carolina, some cities are experiencing notable decreases in credit limits, which can exacerbate financial difficulties for residents. A lower credit limit reduces purchasing power and can be a sign of economic instability.

WalletHub recently analyzed the change in average credit limits across 100 major U.S. cities from Q1 2023 to 2024.

Among the five North Carolina cities included in the study, four ranked in the top 50% for the largest decreases in credit limits, with one city placing in the top 5 nationally.

    North Carolina Credit Limit Rankings:

    1. Durham, NC
      • Overall Rank: 5
      • Change in Average Credit Limit Rank: 5
    2. Raleigh, NC
      • Overall Rank: 11
      • Change in Average Credit Limit Rank: 14
    3. Greensboro, NC
      • Overall Rank: 14
      • Change in Average Credit Limit Rank: 8
    4. Winston-Salem, NC
      • Overall Rank: 33
      • Change in Average Credit Limit Rank: 33
    5. Charlotte, NC
      • Overall Rank: 74
      • Change in Average Credit Limit Rank: 66

Despite being the state's largest banking city, Charlotte was the only city that fared relatively well. For those concerned about credit limits, WalletHub suggests using multiple credit cards, paying bills more frequently, and monitoring credit scores regularly.
