We all like to think we're tidy, with our moms' voices reminding us to make our beds, do the dishes, and clean the bathrooms. But sometimes, we fall short.

Did you know that more than 1.57 million Americans live without a toilet or tap at home? The lack of basic water sanitation costs the U.S. economy $8.58 billion every year, according to a report produced by DigDee.

HouseFresh recently conducted a study to identify the dirtiest cities in America, and unfortunately, a North Carolina city ranked high on the list—Charlotte was named the 3rd dirtiest city in the country.

So how did HouseFresh reach this conclusion?

They analyzed 12.3 million sanitation-related 311 complaints made over the past year. These complaints covered issues like garbage and waste recycling, and cities were ranked based on the number of reports per 100,000 people.

Charlotte came in third with over 31,000 complaints, just behind Baltimore, which took the top spot with more than 47,000 complaints. Now, does this mean Charlotte is actually filthy, or are its residents more likely to report issues?

It could be a mix of both, but either way, it's a statistic worth noting. The study even breaks down specific problem areas within cities by zip code.
