North Carolina Lucky Man wins nearly $440,000 in lottery the day after buying house

A man in North Carolina won big on a scratch-off lottery ticket the day after buying a new home.

“I closed on a house on Wednesday,” Benny Murphy told North Carolina Education Lottery officials. “They made a joke about lower payments if I won the lottery.”

Murphy bought his $1 ticket from Quickmart on U.S. 70 West in Mebane and won a $439,527 jackpot prize.

He claimed his prize money Monday and took home $314,262 after required federal and state tax withholdings.

According to lottery officials, Murphy plans to pay off his house, go on a fishing trip, and save some of his winnings.
