Layoffs continue to hit North Carolina hard. Under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, companies with more than 100 full-time employees must give 60 days' notice before laying off 50 or more workers at a single site.

On August 28th, Keystone Powdered Metal Company announced it would be laying off 217 employees in Troutman due to a plant closure.

This notice is just the latest in a series of layoffs across North Carolina. In recent weeks, companies like Stewart-Haas Racing, Columbus McKinnon Corporation, Winn Management Group LLC, and UpStream Care Company have all issued WARN notices, impacting hundreds of workers across the state.

Here’s a snapshot of the recent layoffs:

    • Stewart-Haas Racing: 323 employees will be permanently laid off by December 31, 2024.
    • Columbus McKinnon Corporation: 73 workers will be laid off by September 29, 2024, due to a permanent closure.
    • Winn Management Group LLC: 159 employees will be laid off by September 30, 2024.
    • UpStream Care Company: 66 employees will be laid off by September 15, 2024.

As these job cuts continue, many are concerned about the broader economic implications. Is the U.S. headed for a recession? What, if anything, Gov. Roy Cooper can be done to stop these layoffs?
