FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – A Montross man is behind bars after a U-turn hit and run, and related charges.

According to a media statement from the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO), the incident occurred Saturday, August 3.

At 3:29 p.m., an SCSO deputy responded to the intersection of Chatham Heights Road and Kings Highway for multiple calls regarding an auto accident.

The driver of a Jeep Wrangler had attempted a U-Turn on the Chatham Bridge and struck a Honda Civic.

Witnesses advised that immediately after the crash, the driver of the Jeep drove towards the wood line, exited his vehicle and fled into the wooded area.

Within the still-running Jeep, the SCSO deputy found purchase paperwork for the vehicle along with a cell phone – both belonging to one Antonio Cruz Mascorro..

Deputies set up a perimeter in an attempt to locate Mascorro. He was soon observed in the area of Naomi Road, and swifty detained by another SCSO deputy.

Mascorro admitted that he fled the scene due to the vehicle being uninsured. However, he also claimed that he had not been driving and blamed it on a man named “Jesus.”

After speaking with several witnesses, deputies determined that Mascorro had, in fact, been the one driving the Wrangler involved in the accident.

Four occupants in the Honda sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Mascorro was charged with felony hit and run with personal injuries, reckless driving, driving while suspended, conducting an illegal U-Turn, having expired registration, and operating an uninsured vehicle. He was held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
