On Wednesday, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced that 63 municipalities across the state will get more than $30 million in traffic signal upgrades.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Transportation Secretary Mike Carroll announced the grant awards through PennDOT’s “Green Light-GO” program during a press conference. The program funding will increase safety and mobility across the state while relieving congestion and improving traffic flow. Many of the grant projects will upgrade traffic signals to newer technologies, which allow traffic signals to respond in real-time to traffic demand.

“The safety improvements supported by the Green Light-Go program will help municipalities relieve congestion and traffic flow and keep Pennsylvanians moving safely and efficiently,” Carroll said. “I’m proud that the Department of Transportation will continue to help our communities improve mobility for Pennsylvanians as we continue to deliver real results across the Commonwealth.”

The grants will be provided as reimbursements to municipalities for updates, officials said. The projects will be funded through the Fiscal Year 2024-2025 appropriations and may be utilized for a range of improvements including LED technology installation, traffic signal retiming, special event plan development and traffic signal monitoring.

Among the grant recipients were the City of Pittsburgh, which received $2.32 million to modernize traffic signals throughout the city; $80,887 for Antis Township to modernize traffic signal equipment and $14,800 for Towanda Borough in Bradford County for traffic signal retiming along Main Street in the borough.
