This Abandoned Virginia Mansion is One of the Most Beautiful Places in the Country

Virginia is home to its fair share of abandoned buildings and ghost towns but none are quite as hauntingly beautiful as this abandoned mansion that can be found in Afton. Keep reading to learn more.

Perched high above the Blue Ridge Mountains is the iconic landmark known as Swannanoa Palace.

The Italianate style marble villa was built by a millionaire and philanthropist known as Major James Dooley, a Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad Company executive, as a summer home for the love of his wife Sally May back in 1912.

Over 300 artisans were hired to build the 52 room home, which is an exact replica of the Villa de Medici in Rome.

Design details include arched column entryways, an outdoor fountain, and stained glass windows.

The inside of the mansion is equally as impressive and no detail was left not spared. You'll find fresco-painted domed ceilings, marble staircases, chandeliers, and beautifully intricate crown molding finishes in just about every corner of the mansion.

This visually-stunning masterpiece has unfortunately sat vacant of residents for decades now. However, it isn't completely abandoned. It is privately owned by a company called Skyline Swannanoa.

A visit to this mansion is a must-visit for anyone who loves history or just beautiful architectural design. The premises are open to the public for exploration and offers both self and guided tours on the weekends for $10 bucks and under.
