The islands of Fiji are experiencing a surge in tourism, thanks to an unlikely source — the reality TV show Love Island. This popular dating series has inadvertently become Fiji’s most effective tourism campaign.

For multiple seasons, Fiji has served as the setting for Love Island. The reality program pairs up young singles in a tropical villa in the hopes that they can find love. And now, bookings to the South Pacific paradise have skyrocketed since the show.

Spectacular views of the island nation’s natural beauty, crystal-clear waters, and picture-perfect beaches have made people yearn to experience island life.

    Riding The Wave Of Popularity

The impact of this unexpected promotion has been nothing short of remarkable. Brent Hill, CEO of Tourism Fiji, was quoted by TravelAGE West as saying that North American visitor visits increased by an astounding 18% to 20% in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the previous year. With 2023 having previously broken all records for Fiji’s tourism industry, this rise stands out even more.

Also, on nonstop trips between North America and Nadi in 2023, Fiji Airways, the national carrier, recorded a 17% increase in seat capacity compared to the previous year. The debut of the new Airbus A350 aircraft, which has boosted capacity and improved the travel experience for long-haul passengers, is partially responsible for this development, according to Akuila Batiweti, the airline’s chief marketing and sales officer.

    When To Visit Fiji

For those interested in joining the Love Island bandwagon and wanting to know when Fiji is most beautiful, the dry season, which runs from May to October, is ideal. During these months, you can expect sunny skies, lower humidity, and cooler temperatures, making it suitable for outdoor activities.

This period also coincides with the peak tourist season, so while the islands will be busy, you’ll find a festive atmosphere and plenty of cultural experiences. If you prefer a quieter experience and don’t mind occasional rain showers, consider visiting during the wet season (November to April). While there’s a higher chance of rainfall, you’ll enjoy lower prices and fewer crowds.

    What To Do

Fiji offers a wealth of activities for every type of guest:

    • Water Sports: Snorkel or scuba dive in coral reefs, try surfing at world-class breaks, or enjoy kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding in calm lagoons.
    • Island Hopping: Explore the Mamanuca and Yasawa island groups, each offering enriching experiences and stunning scenery.
    • Cultural Experiences: Participate in a traditional kava ceremony, visit Fijian villages, or enjoy meke performances showcasing Fijian music and dance.
    • Hiking: Trek through rainforests to hidden waterfalls, such as the Tavoro Waterfalls on Taveuni Island.
    • Relaxation: Unwind on beaches, indulge in spa treatments, or soak in the laid-back “Fiji Time” atmosphere.
