TRENTON (WWJ) — A minor from Trenton could be in trouble with the law after police were forced to evacuate a recreation center Tuesday morning.

Trenton police were called to the Kennedy Recreation Center on West Road near Fort Street around 8:15 a.m. after a bomb threat was called in.

Trenton officers responded within minutes and began evacuating the building. The initial search and evacuation were “orderly,” according to police, and the property was restricted for the public’s safety.

Officers then conducted a “thorough, methodical search of the building which yielded nothing suspicious.” Out of an abundance of caution, Trenton police requested the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, and the Wayne County Airport Authority Police to come to the scene for the use of their explosive detection K9 units.

Those agencies conducted a third search, which revealed nothing suspicious and the scene was deemed safe.

Just after 9 a.m. — less than an hour after the police were first called to the scene — investigators were able to trace the origin of the threat to a home in Trenton. Detectives went to the location and spoke with a juvenile male and his parent.

The boy, whose age was not disclosed, did in fact make the call, according to police. Due to his young age, and the fact that he has not been charged, his information will not be released.

The case will be turned over to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office for review.

Authorities did not release any further information about the case, including the nature of the threat or what his motive may have been.

“We would also like to remind people that we take all threats to the public seriously, and we will follow every lead available to bring those making the threats to justice,” a press release from the Trenton Police Department said.
