Independence Day is this week, but that doesn’t always mean big fireworks shows at every house in hot, dry regions like eastern Washington.

Washington state has regulations on fireworks , and counties and cities can have even stricter rules. The state outlaws firecrackers, skyrockets, missiles and bottle rockets anywhere in Washington except on reservations.

Across Tri-Cities, there are numerous regulations on acceptable fireworks. The permitted fireworks will differ depending on where you plan to set them off. In a recent video , local fire chiefs suggested purchasing your fireworks in the same jurisdiction you plan to use them in. A full breakdown of the laws is available online .

These regulations are in the interest of public safety. Fireworks can be dangerous when set off by inexperienced hands, and even more so during fire season. Restricting the kinds of fireworks available to average citizens helps keep everyone safe.

But what happens when these rules are broken?

    Illegal fireworks use in Tri-Cities

Depending on where the infraction occurred, setting off illegal fireworks can result in a fine of $250 or more.

Police will patrol during the holiday and confiscate any illegal fireworks.

To report the use of illegal fireworks, call non-emergency dispatch rather than 911, at 509-628-0333. If an injury occurs or an uncontrollable fire breaks out, call 911 instead.

    Firework safety in Tri-Cities

No matter what kind of fireworks are used, certain safety precautions should always be implemented around them. If you notice your neighbor hasn’t followed these tips, consider making a suggestion.

    • Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby.

    • Stay aware of wind conditions.

    • Only light fireworks on a smooth, flat, outside surface. Maintain a safe distance from structures, dry leaves, and flammable materials.

    • Never allow kids around fireworks unsupervised, and make sure they stay at a safe distance.

    • Never pick up or re-light a firework that didn’t light the first time.

    • Only light one firework at a time, and move back quickly after each ignition.

    • Always dispose of used fireworks safely, by letting them soak in a bucket of water overnight before throwing them away.
