American Legion Post 70 in Troy will host a Memorial Day Service at 11 a.m. Monday at Bicentennial Park. The public is invited to come in remembrance of those who gave their lives in service to their country and helped secure the freedoms that Americans enjoy today.

Bob McLendon, Commander, Post 70, said the names of Pike County citizens who gave their lives in service to their county will be read aloud during the service.

“It is right that we call the names of those who died in war zones,” McLendon said. “We must never forget their sacrifices and we must also remember their loved ones who also sacrificed.”

McLendon said recognition will also be given to veterans who returned home but later died of combat related causes.

Special music will be presented by Brooklyn Moran, a student at Charles Henderson High School.

Everyone is invited and encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to honor those who won and secured the freedoms that all Americans enjoy today, McLendon said.

“It’s the least we can do.”

Memorial Day was Originally known as Decoration Day. It originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season.
