The celebration of a library’s summer reading program isn’t the end of the summer and it’s incentive to keep reading for study and for pleasure and individual learning.
The last summer reading program at Troy Public Library was encouragement for kids to “let loose with their creativity,” said Kate Deal, children’s librarian.
“During our last program of the summer, we really wanted to encourage the kids to let loose and embrace their creativity,” Deal said. “To follow our theme for this year, which is ‘Adventure Begins at Your Library,’ we chose to focus this program on space adventures.
“We read “Bloop,” a picture book about an alien dog that was discovering Earth for the first time. After the story time portion of the event, the kids were able to color a jumbo rocket made of cardboard and paint their space-themed sun-catchers. “
And that is where the students were able to let their imaginations run wild.
“They could choose to paint their sun-catcher however they wanted, whether they made an alien blue or green, or if they painted a rainbow planet or rocket ship,” Deal said.” All of the kids just had fun painting a sun-catcher they could then take home and display to commemorate the summer.”
Deal shifted gears for the 6-11years old participants in the summer reading program. She wanted to create a program to help introduce the kids to the idea of making their own art.
“As someone who has enjoyed painting for a long time, I thought it was the perfect hobby to introduce the kids to,” Deal said. “It’s fairly inexpensive and it’s a great way to showcase their creativity. We had two parties, each with a guest list of 30 kids, who got a pre-drawn canvas of what they selected to paint, an easel, some paint, and brushes.”
Each budding young artist had the selection of painting a dragon, a frog, a shark, a flower, butterfly or a unicorn.
“They really had fun creating their own piece to take home,” Deal said.
For all the readers, the summer reading program 20024 was encouragement to read for pleasure as well as for study.

Each year, the Troy Public Library’s Summer Reading program offers a variety of activities that encourage reading.
At the end of the summer program, the top readers are recognized for making reading a part of their summer activities.
Kate Deal, TPL children’s director, expressed congratulations to the top winners in each age division and to all young readers who participated in the Adventure Begins at Your Library summer reading program.

Top 4-5 year-old readers are 1st Zeke Winters; 2nd Elias Medina-Duran and 3re Henry Gardner. Top 6-year-old readers are 1st Chloe Danner and 2nd Ivan Dove.
Top 7-year-old readers are 1st Davis Money and 2nd Jack Riley Ellis.
Top 8-year-old readers are 1st, Gracie Ellis and 2nd Rosie Camwell;
Top 9-year- old readers are 1st Will Richard and 2nd Liam Farrar.
Top 10-year-old reader is Angel Davis.
Top 11-year-old readers are 1st Temperance Farrar and 2nd Maddie Carmody. Top 12-18 year old readers are 1st, Penny Earnest, 2nd Joe Drinkwater and 3rd Becca Ann Oliver.
