VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (TCD) -- A 63-year-old man will spend over two decades in prison for breaking into his ex-girlfriend's home and attacking her with a brick, causing a brain bleed.

Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney Colin Stolle announced June 10 that a judge sentenced Bobby Bland to 20 years and 12 months in prison. Bland pleaded guilty in February to malicious wounding, statutory burglary of building with the intent to commit rape/rob/murder/arson, and assault and battery of a family member.

According to prosecutors, on Oct. 17, 2023, the victim evicted Bland from her home after they had lived together. On the night of Oct. 23, 2023, she reportedly awoke to Bland "breaking the sliding glass door to her bedroom with a brick."

Stolle said Bland's ex-girlfriend rushed to her front door as Bland chased and threatened to kill her. As she was trying to exit her apartment, Bland reportedly hit her between 10 to 15 times in the head with the brick "while yelling that he was going to kill her."

A neighbor heard the struggle, called 911, and held Bland at gunpoint until law enforcement responded to the home, according to Stolle.

When officers arrived, they noticed the victim was "bleeding profusely" from her head. Police recovered a piece of bloody brick nearby and observed Bland's hands covered in blood.

As officers escorted Bland into a patrol vehicle, he allegedly called the victim "lucky" to be alive and that she "got what she deserved."

Bland's ex-girlfriend sustained severe lacerations to her head, finger wounds, and a brain bleed. According to the commonwealth's attorney's office, she required multiple staples due to her injuries.

Bland has previously been convicted of a DUI.
