UPDATE: Bainbridge, GA. - The body of Luther Johnson was recovered from the Flint River by the Bainbridge Public Safety which was originally believed to be the man from a video that went viral on Facebook Live showing him jumping from a bridge near Cheney Griffin Park.

The viral video shows a man walking down the railroad tracks near Cheney Griffin Park where he is seen taking money and other items out of his pockets before taking a jump into the Flint River. It follows by showing him climbing over the edge and dropping into the river where he began briefly swimming several meters up the river, before disappearing under the water and not resurfacing.

According to Fire Chief Charlie McCann, law enforcement searched past midnight last night, using both boats as well as an infrared drone, before calling off the search for the evening and resuming this morning. DNR, Bainbridge Public Safety, the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office and Decatur County Fire and Rescue are all involved in various aspects of the search and investigation. The individual is presumed dead.

The man recording the video went live and claims it was his cousin. The search for the missing swimmer by the BPS began around 8:42 pm on Tuesday and ended at around 12 a.m. on Wednesday before resuming later this morning.

According to a local news source Decatur County fire Chief Charlie McCann believes if social media hadn’t been involved, the man might still be alive. “When the individual that was filming it, when he saw him jumping into the water if he’d called us, or called 911, that had jumped in the river or whatever, he might still be with us today,” McCann said.
