Dexter Scott King, the younger son of Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, has passed away at the age of 62 after a battle with prostate cancer. Dexter King died at his home in California, as reported by The King Center in Atlanta. Born on January 30, 1961, Dexter King was just seven years old when his father, the renowned civil rights leader, was assassinated in 1968.

Dexter King played a significant role in preserving and promoting his father's legacy. He served as the chairman of the King Center, focusing on protecting the King family's intellectual property and shepherding his father's heritage. He is survived by his wife of 11 years, Leah Weber King, his sister Dr. Bernice King, his brother Martin Luther King III, and his niece Yolanda Renee King. His death follows that of his father, mother, and sister Yolanda King, who passed away in 2007.

Dexter Scott King, a graduate of Frederick Douglass High School and Morehouse College in Atlanta, was remembered for facing life's challenges, including his final battle with cancer, with bravery and determination. His family, including Dr. Bernice King and Martin Luther King III, expressed their deep sadness and shock at his sudden passing, requesting prayers for the entire King family during this difficult time.

A memorial service for Dexter Scott King will be announced at a later date
