Tryon Arts and Crafts School to host Literary Open Stage

TRYON—The Tryon Arts and Crafts School is getting ready to host an event to delve into the connection between visual art and poetry. Scheduled for July 17 at 6 p.m., the event, titled “Fantastic Ekphrastics – Connecting Poetry and Art at TACS,” invites writers and art enthusiasts to explore the intersection of these two art forms.

Participants will have the opportunity to engage with finished art and express their interpretations through various forms of poetry, including prose, form, meter, free form, and even slam poetry.

Renowned illustrator Kevin Sprouls of Tryon and multidisciplinary artist Janet Orselli of Columbus will be in attendance to collaborate with participants, making this a unique opportunity for creative exchange.

“So you must be wondering what an Ekphrastic poem means?” explains local poet and educator David Riddle. “An Ekphrastic poem is a vivid description of a scene, or more commonly, a work of art. Through the imaginative act of narrating and reflecting on the ‘action’ of a painting or sculpture, the poet may amplify and expand its meaning.

“In ancient Greece, the term Ekphrasis was applied to the skill of scribing a thing with vivid detail. One of the earliest examples of Ekphrasis can be found in Homer’s epic poem The Iliad, in which the speaker elaborately describes the shield of Achilles in nearly 150 poetic lines.”

Those interested in participating are encouraged to visit the TACS gallery show during regular business hours leading up to the open mic. Alternatively, attendees can arrive an hour before the readings begin and immerse themselves in the art on display.

The event promises to be an uplifting and supportive environment for individuals to share their creativity. Attendees can look forward to engaging in literary discussions, exchanging spontaneous creative ideas with fellow participants, and enjoying refreshments, including snacks and wine.
