Edmonds Sand Sculpture contest gets underway July 19
An annual summer tradition, the Edmonds Sand Sculpture contest is scheduled for Friday, July 19 at Brackett’s Beach, just south of the Edmonds-Kingston ferry terminal. Check-in at the Edmonds Waterfront Center Wedding Circle, just outside the Waterfront Center at 220 Railroad Ave. Registration opens at 11 a.m. and judging starts at 1 p.m. Bucket awards are presented at 2:30 p.m.

Redmond High's health clinic gets upgrades to support student health
Even with school out for the summer, Redmond High School's medical clinic remains open for students and local children for primary care. School-based health centers have been operating in Oregon since 1986. They are primary care centers equipped with doctors, nurses and physician assistants. At Redmond High School, students also have access to dietitians, nutritionists, psychiatrists and therapists, though they aren’t stationed there all the time.
Tice celebrity Kitsap golf event expects to raise $150K
The Mike Tice Foundation held its third Celebrity Golf Tournament at White Horse Golf Course in Kingston July 15. 28 sports celebrities led teams of golfers at the tourney. Some are well-known to Seattle fans, like Steve Largent (NFL Hall of Fame Seahawk wide receiver), Paul Moyer (Seahawk safety), Jim Zorn and Warren Moon (Hawks quarterbacks), Mack Strong (Seahawk fullback), Norm Johnson (Hawk kicker), Bret Boone (Mariners second baseman), John Olreud (M’s first baseman, two-time World Series champion and 1993 batting champion) and Jack Sikma (NBA Hall of Fame, Sonics center-forward).

I recently traveled from Burlington to Washington, D.C., to talk with our congressional delegation about rail transportation challenges and opportunities in Skagit County. Burlington is an authentic railroad town, having been built around the junction of the old Great Northern Railway and Seattle & Northern Railway in the 1890s. Like other cities that sprouted along busy rail lines, Burlington has experienced both the positive and negative sides of train traffic over the years.

Fire levy lid lift on August primary election ballot
Ballots are due by 8 p.m. on Election Day, August 6. Langley, Wash. – The South Whidbey Fire/EMS Board of Fire Commissioners has placed a fire levy lid lift on the August 6, 2024, primary election ballot. The lid lift would fund additional firefighters to reduce response times and replace fire engines and apparatus that have aged out of service.
La Conner School Board approves contract for Cram as interim superintendent
Last week, the La Conner School Board approved a supplemental contract for interim Superintendent Dave Cram for the 2024-2025 school year. Cram works as the La Conner School District’s director of finance and operations, human resources and risk management; director of operations and planning; and transportation supervisor. The School Board appointed Cram the district’s interim superintendent after Superintendent Will Nelson departed for a position teaching education leadership at Western Washington University’s Woodring College of Education in July. The approval of the supplemental contract means that Cram will be paid an additional $12,000 in total for his superintendent duties. The Board intends to hire a permanent superintendent by June 2025. Cram will help facilitate the process.
