Legislative candidates talk ferries, schools
High temperatures didn’t deter voters from attending another in-person candidate forum this week on South Whidbey. Under the twinkle lights of Clinton Community Hall and over the drone of several fans, state representative and state senator candidates for the 10th Legislative District shared their thoughts on sea level rise, gun violence and many other topics during the nonpartisan moderated forum hosted by the Clinton Community Council in partnership with Sno-Isle Libraries. Though officials said the turnout wasn’t as high as the hall’s first candidate forum in June, around 85 people braved the summer heat.
Save money and time with advance ticket sales for Evergreen State Fair
MONROE — Buying fair tickets in advance saves money. That means more to blow on Fisher scones and games. It also means not having to wait in line at the ticket booth, which means more time to play at the Evergreen State Fair in Monroe. “You can go straight...
Shrek, Jr. takes the stage at children’s theater
Michael Morgen is a believer that the Whidbey Children’s Theatre upcoming production of “Shrek, Jr. the Musical” is well worth the price of admission. “I always want to tell people how good the shows are here because sometimes people think of them as only being for kids, because it’s a children’s theater,” the director said, “but I would hold a lot of our shows up against any other theater company on Whidbey as being really powerful and well done.”

Playhouse brings nostalgic frenzy to stage
The Whidbey Playhouse’s stage turned into Dr. Seuss’ nonsensical mind for the season’s grand finale, mixing bright colors, tongue-twisting songs and acrobatic wonders to create the ultimate sugar rush on steroids experience. “Seussical,” directed by daughter and father duo Shelby and Matt Montoya, runs Fridays July 19...
Forum: For 123 years, community has counted on The Herald
When I was a kid growing up in Mill Town, there were always a few things you could count on. There was always Bob Dylan singing on the radio, “I Love Lucy” on the television, milk in the fridge, a neighborhood baseball game on the sandlot, and a newspaper on the front porch.
Herald staff cuts will diminish coverage
The sale of the Everett Herald to Carpenter Media Group has and will erode the quality we, as subscribers, have come to expect! Laying off 10 of 18 staff members is clearly a union-busting tactic! With ownership in a right-to-work state, these owners have exerted their “power” here.
Once an MLB bust, Mill Creek’s Travis Snider now hopes to change toxic culture
When Travis Snider was 11 years old, playing in the Little League Western Regional Tournament, he suddenly started hyperventilating. Snider had pitched a perfect first inning and hit a home run. Then, in the second inning, he couldn’t throw a strike. His heart rate shot up, and he started crying. He had to be taken out of the game. At the time, the incident was chalked up to sports-induced asthma.

EDMONDS — Customers at Ezell’s evacuated after a man made racist comments to employees and threatened them with a knife in June, according to charges filed in Snohomish County Superior Court. The suspect, 47, was charged last week with commission of a hate crime, second-degree assault and two...
Readers need reporting, facts Herald provides
I have been a reader of a local daily newspaper all of my adult life. Since moving to Everett 42 years ago, I have been a Herald subscriber. I cannot imagine a town or city of any size without a local newspaper and it is heartbreaking and galling to realize this important source of information is on the brink of extinction. Local newspapers provide the community with information, entertainment and important investigative reporting. We are more and more often overwhelmed with national news, opinion and “journalism” that can barely (sometimes not at all) pass the test of integrity and impartiality. We no longer live in a fact-based news environment, just one in which readers and consumers have become commodities for “news” outlets to increase ratings and clicks.
Loss of Herald staff is a loss of the free press
Why is this corporate takeover of The Herald and its layoffs happening and why now?. Does this combine with the development of AM radio networks and right wing talk radio throughout rural and small town America since 1968?. Are we seeing a landscape scale media takeover to support the 2025...

Seattle Residents Wake Up To Poor Air Quality After Fourth Of July Fireworks
The morning after Fourth of July, residents in Seattle, Kirkland, and Bothell woke up to hazy skies and poor air quality. According to IQ Air, the Seattle area’s air quality ranked among the worst in major U.S. cities on Friday. Although the overall AQI was rated as “moderate” at 92 according to IQ Air’s system, many reporting stations in the area recorded AQIs well above 100.
