Boston Avenue Methodist Church welcomes new senior pastor Sunday

TULSA, Okla. — Boston Avenue Methodist Church welcomed Rev. Dr. Sam Powers as the new senior pastor on Sunday.

Powers, who grew up participating in the church’s children’s and youth choirs and interned in the late 80s, returns to a congregation eager for his leadership following Rev. David Wiggs' decade-long tenure.

"I grew up in this church, so this is very familiar in a lot of ways, but yet it’s very different," Powers said.

Church members expressed excitement about Powers' return.

"I think probably the most exciting thing was that he grew up in Boston Avenue and he knew all the traditions of Boston Avenue," Boston Avenue Church member Brian Barrow said. "He even sang in the chapel choir, which we are really passionate about."

Powers preached his first sermon Sunday morning on inclusion. His preaching style is influenced by Dr. Briggs, who served as senior pastor for 33 years before Wiggs.

Dallas Campbell noted Powers' emphasis on this subject.

"He was talking about being a part of a group, and I saw it as him trying to become part of this congregation,” Campbell said.

Powers shared his vision for the church's future.

"I would like to see all of Tulsa at least come here at some point in their lives and experience this wonderful place," Powers said.
