Tulsa Animal Welfare over max capacity

TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa Animal Welfare (TAW) is over max capacity and needs families to adopt before the 4th of July.

Colton Jones, operations manager at Tulsa Animal Welfare, says their animals of the same litter have to share kennels.

" We are actually over capacity so we do have animals that are sharing kennels, especially if they are littermates, they are sharing a kennel to save space," Jones said.

The high-number of animals is due to kitten and puppy season. Instead of taking in one or two animals at a time, TAW is taking in full litters.

"Normally it's going to be the day after 4th of July when all the biggest celebrations are going on that we will probably see an increase," Jones said.

TAW hasn't seen an increase yet, but expect to after the holiday. They recommend to bring animals inside during fireworks to keep them from running away.

"If bringing them inside is not possible, go out and make sure they have a tight fitting, well adjusted collar on that's not going to immediately slip off their heads, or a harness," Jones said.

If an animal does end up running away, TAW says to first check the neighborhood because pets usually stay within a mile of their home.

If you are looking to adopt, TAW is in need of both long and short term fosters.

"We are always in need of people to step up and foster, so what that allows us to do is temporarily get them out of the shelter while we seek placement options for them," Jones said.

Tulsa Animal Welfare will be closed on the 4th of July but will be back open on July 5.
