The college football and NFL worlds are mourning the loss of Khyree Jackson.

James Crepea with The Oregonian announced via X that Jackson died in an auto accident over the Fourth of July weekend. He was only 24 years old.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport provided additional details from the Maryland State Police Department. Jackson was one of three victims killed in the car accident, with all of them riding in the same vehicle. Two other cars were involved in the accident, and although no one else was injured, police believe that alcohol played a factor in the fatal accident.

“Our thoughts are with Khyree’s family, friends, teammates and coaches, as well as all the victims of this tragic accident," a statement from the Vikings read.

"I am absolutely crushed by this news," a statement read from head coach Kevin O'Connell. "Khyree brought a contagious energy to our facility and our team. His confidence and engaging personality immediately drew his teammates to him. In our short time together, it was evident Khyree was going to develop into a tremendous professional football player, but what was more impressive was his desire to become the best person he could be for his family and those around him. "

Jackson had just turned his NFL dreams into a reality. He was taken by the Minnesota Vikings in the 2024 NFL Draft, going in the fourth round with the 108th overall pick.

Prior to making it into the NFL, Jackson was a 4-star JUCO recruit out of East Mississippi Community College. He attracted enough attention at the JUCO level to be recruited by Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Jackson spent two seasons with the Crimson Tide program, but a suspension for unknown reasons inevitably led to him seeking playing time elsewhere. He transferred to play for the Oregon Ducks, and the move helped him get on the map of NFL scouts.

In one season for the Ducks, Jackson was named first-team All-Pac-12. He finished the season with five tackles for loss, three interceptions, and seven pass breakups.

The football world will continue to mourn Jackson's passing as details continue to emerge from the tragic accident.
