Celine Dion staged an emotional comeback on Friday during the Opening Ceremony of the Paris Olympics, marking the singer’s first televised performance since announcing her diagnosis with stiff person syndrome nearly two years ago.
Adding to the epic scope of the moment, Dion’s stunning performance of Edith Piaf’s “Hymne A L’Amour” took place on the Eiffel Tower. Watch the must-see musical moment in full here .
Dion’s performance was held until the end of the multi-hour broadcast, once night had settled over the City of Light and the Olympic flame had been lit under the shadow of the Eiffel Tower.
“I was not ready for that ending,” said Kelly Clarkson, who was co-hosting the Opening Ceremony for NBC and Peacock. “If you know anything about Celine right now, she feels like this is her purpose. And if you know anything about what she’s going through right now … I’m so sorry, I’m trying to hold it together … but [the fact] that she got through that, that was incredible.”
Of course, this isn’t the first time Dion has wowed an Olympic crowd. She previously performed at the Opening Ceremony in Atlanta, Ga., in 1996. You can relive that iconic performance below:
Though Dion has limited her public appearances in recent years, she has not completely disappeared from the spotlight. She famously made a surprise appearance at the 66th Grammy Awards in February 2024, presenting the Album of the Year trophy to Taylor Swift.
“When I say I’m happy to be here, I really mean it from my heart,” Dion said as she took the stage. “Those who have been blessed enough to be here at the Grammy Awards, must never take for granted the tremendous love and joy that music brings to our lives and to people all around the world.”
Since then, Dion was the subject of the Prime Video documentary I Am: Celine Dion , a feature-length look inside her new normal. The film’s release in June 2024 was accompanied by a vulnerable sit-down interview with NBC News in which Dion detailed the painful realities of her health struggles.
