Bravo’s very final easy days begin this Sunday, Aug. 11, when SEAL Team launches its 10-episode farewell run on Paramount+.

Season 6 left off with Bravo’s fate uncertain, given an impressive but surely damning demonstration of solidarity. Team leader Jason Hayes had disclosed — at his Navy Cross ceremony, no less — his TBI and compromised state on recent missions, after which he was called on the carpet by superiors. “You created one hell of a mess, and left us no choice but to stand you down,” Blackburn announced.

But Ray interrupted that proceeding to reveal that he has been suffering PTS since his kidnapping, after which everybody else filed into the room — Sonny, Brock, Trent, Omar, and two dozen other operators, each recounting what impairs them.

When Season 7 opens on Sunday, viewers will lay witness to the assorted ways in which Bravo was not “punished” per se but… punished nonetheless, for embarrassing command so publicly.

TVLine spoke with the military drama’s front man and executive producer, David Boreanaz, about the state of Bravo Team and what it will take to get them back in the fight.

TVLINE | Where do we find Bravo when the season opens, and what is Jason specifically up to?
This for me has been a full circle journey. Heading into season even before the writers strike, I decided that this was the end for me — that’s something not too many people are aware of.

We find Jason in a place of complete resolve, of finishing that full circle, in an examination of what these special operators go through. He’s a bit laid back, reserved, on the sideline kind of waiting, while thinking that his balance is complete — with his family life and his teams life. But then we find that that’s not really the case, and that being an operator, this type of character, may not end too well with him. That’s something that I had kind of discussed and wanted in a lot of ways, and I’m excited to let that unfold.

    Jason, Emma and Mikey

TVLINE | We see Jason spending time in the premiere with Mikey and Emma and her boyfriend…. Would you say that helps him envision a different, non-Bravo future for himself?
I would say it makes him see a future that maybe he still feels a bit awkward with. Because what he thinks is working necessarily may not work. [ Laughs ] The final hook to this circle for these operators is, “How do they deal with their kills?” how that traumatically impacts them both in the missions as well as when at home. So for him to be kinda home the first few episodes, it’s going to be very traumatic, and that’s something he’ll have to lean into, in order to resolve this and let this go and heal himself. But ultimately, he may be taken by the biggest force of all, and that’s death. That’s something we have to keep on the table and wanted to keep on the table. How he gets back into the battlefield and what happens to him is going to be interesting.

TVLINE | I was going to say, Bravo is pretty deep in the dog house with DEVGRU right now. What will it take for them to get back in their good graces enough to kick down some doors again?
Well, that kind of unfolds a few months after we pick up the story… Obviously the world keeps turning and evil presents itself in a place where these operators are needed, especially Bravo Team. They’ll be kicking rocks for a couple of episodes — you’ll see some training that goes on as they patiently wait to be back, installed into their unit. And it is a whole new evolution of war that is going on for them, and they’ve got to adapt or if not, be pushed aside — so that will be a big challenge for them.

TVLINE | During this final season, what would you say is the balance of action versus scenes that are more emotional and introspective?
It’s very emotional and introspective in the first half; I would say the balance comes in the back half. That’s not to say there’s more action in the back end than the front, but we build to it. In the first episode, you feel the emotion, and that develops into Episode 2, where we see the major impact of the saving of somebody in a situation they find themselves in. That moment in Episode 2 catapults us into the heavy front stuff, which then makes its way into the back end — and that’s where it gets crazy .
