Game of Thrones ‘ Jon Snow famously came back from the dead, but a sequel centered on the character seems unlikely to do so.

In a new interview with GQ , Kit Harington — who played Jon for all eight seasons of the HBO drama — offers fresh details regarding why a proposed spinoff based on his Thrones character died in development.

After revealing that HBO came to him, asking whether he’d be up for a spinoff, Harington said his initial reaction was “No.” But after some consideration, “I thought there could be an interesting and important story about the soldier after the war,” he says. “I felt that there might be something left to say, and a story left to tell, in a pretty limited way.”

A few years later, after many conversations, “nothing got us excited enough,” he says. “In the end, I kind of backed out and said, ‘I think if we push this any further and keep developing it, we could end up with something that’s not good. And that’s the last thing we all want.'”

TVLine has reached out to HBO for comment.

The Jon Snow spinoff made news in June 2022, when George R.R. Martin announced on his blog that Harington was on board for a show about the onetime King in the North, and that the series’ working title was Snow . But by April 2024, Harington said the show was no longer in development and “firmly on the shelf.”

In the GQ piece, Harington also explained that while playing Jon “might very well be the biggest, most important piece of work I do,” the “baggage” that accompanied his experience would get in the way of forwarding his career in other ways — such as playing tech-company founder Henry Muck in Industry Season 3.

“It’s kind of essential to do my job,” he adds, “for people to come and see me and not see Jon Snow.”
