New little library opens outside courthouse
The Freeborn County courthouse has welcomed its very own little library. The library has been a three-year journey involving three summer interns, Katey Witt, Anika Hansen and Evan Melby, having started in 2022 with Witt, who wanted to make a free library to have near an outdoor bench. Tree expert featured at Northwood meeting
The Worth County Extension Service is planning to host a Selection, Planting and Tree Care meeting Thursday, July 25, at 6 p.m., at the Worth County Fairgrounds, Northwood. Featured speakers include Dr. Billy Beck, Iowa State University Extension Woodland Management Specialist who will discuss tree selection, tree planting and placement in the landscape, healthy tree care practices, successful windbreak establishments and control of Emerald Ash Borer.
Nation of Patriots tour stops in Albert Lea
The 2024 Patriot Tour arrived in Albert Lea Sunday afternoon for a ceremony in the North Broadway parking lot. Joice Top of Iowa Car Show, July 28
The 20th Annual Top of Iowa Car Show will be held in Joice, Sunday, July 28. Each year the number of vehicles registered seems to climb. Last year’s total was 225. The car show will be held downtown Joice. If traveling on I-35, take exit #208, then travel six miles west on 410th St. and on to Main St. Breakfast will be provided by the Joice Public Library from 7-10:30 a.m.

Guest column: Championing health for area’s veterans
I recently attended two poignant veteran ceremonies. On Memorial Day at Albert Lea’s Graceland Cemetery, a moving service took place where all ages attended to pay respect, and our local veterans rendered gunfire salutes to honor the fallen. On June 6, I attended the 80th-anniversary D-Day commemoration at the Normandy American Cemetery to honor my father, surviving veterans and those who sacrificed their lives to defeat Nazism. Worth Co. 4-H successful at State Recognition Day
The Worth County 4-H was again very successful at the annual 4-H State Recognition day at Iowa State University earlier this year. Pictured above are the 4-H members from across the state who were recognized at the State 4-H Conference award ceremony recently. Worth County 4-Her’s Adylyn Petersen and Addyson Runde were named to the prestigious National 4-H Conference Washington D.C. delegate team of six Iowa 4-H members. Winning seats on the 2024-2025 State 4-H Council were Kamryn Backhaus, Jessika Ausborn, Ben Meier and Weston Willand. Backhaus, Landen Nelson and Willand were recognized as representatives to the National 4-H Congress Award trip to Atlanta Georgia with Meier and Runde selected as Iowa State 4-H Healthy Living Ambassadors representing Iowa next March in Washington D.C. Worth County was also well represented with five State 4-H project members including Adylyn Petersen (poultry), Kelsi Liddle (horticulture), Jessika Ausborn (dairy), Ben Meier (communications), and Addyson Runde (horse).
Lake Mills to Add to Its Trail System
The Lake Mills City Council is moving forward with plans to increase the trail system in the city. Lake Mills City Clerk Diane Price explained what the project entailed. The council took up Resolution 24-44 which sets dates for a public hearing and bid letting for the project. According to Price, the initial steps are in place to begin the project.
