Southwest Junior College Football Conference Media Day returns to Hollytree Country Club

TYLER, Texas ( KETK ) — Eight JUCO football coaches got together at Hollytree Country Club Thursday for the 2024 Southwest Junior College Football Conference Media Day.

Among the coaches in attendance were Kilgore College’s Willie Gooden, Trinity Valley Community College’s Sherard Poteete and Tyler Junior College’s Tanner Jacobson.

Kilgore College is picked to finished first in both the preseason coaches and media polls for the SWJCFC, while Trinity Valley CC is picked to finish second.

TJC is picked to finish fourth in both polls.

Kilgore College returns plenty of talent, including starting quarterback Tyler Webb and defensive back Izeal Jones.

Gooden said the Rangers will be experienced at the safety position as well.

Trinity Valley CC head coach Sherard Poteete said he’s excited about his quarterback and linebacker rooms.

The Cardinals have three strong options at quarterback, including UTSA transfer Diego Tello, Army transfer Champ Harris and former Crockett Bulldog Jadyn Collins.

Poteete also said several East Texas players, like former Chapel Hill speedster Tyson Berry, could make an impact at wide receiver and running back.

He did point out the defensive line is somewhat of a question mark, as the Cardinals don’t return much experience up front on defense.

The Apaches will be led by former Longview Lobo Josh Thomas at quarterback as well as Gilmer’s Ashton Haynes in the backfield.

TJC head coach Tanner Jacobson said continuity in his offensive coaching staff will be key for Thomas and the returning offensive players.

Jacobson also said the Apaches should have some pass rushers on the defensive side.

Kilgore College opens the 2024 football season at home against Monterrey Tech on Saturday, August 24. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium in Kilgore.

Trinity Valley CC also opens at home against Independence Community College on Saturday, August 24. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Bruce Field in Athens.

TJC opens on the road at Dodge City Community College on Thursday, August 29. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Dodge City, Kansas.
