TUCSON - Are you looking for upcoming events in the metro Tucson area this weekend?
From the back to school event to open houses at local recreation centers and the Reid Park Zoo's Summer Safari Nights, there's something for everyone.
Quincie Douglas Center to Host Back to School Bash
Prepare for the upcoming school year at the Back to School Bash on Saturday, July 13, from 8-10 a.m. at the Quincie Douglas Center, 1575 E. 36th St.
According to the City of Tucson, families with children ages 5-18 can receive free backpacks with school supplies, enjoy entertainment, snacks, bike repairs, and more.
Children must be present to receive a backpack.
"Ready, Set, Rec!" will offer games and activities, and the Tucson Police Department will distribute free booster seats to qualifying families, according to the City of Tucson.
Parking: Park at the Quincie Douglas Swimming Pool, Library or Silverlake Park parking lots.
Household Hazardous Waste and Shredding Event
The City of Tucson's Environmental and General Services Department (EGSD) is hosting its monthly Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Event on Saturday, July 13, from 8 a.m.-noon at the Rodeo Grounds, 4823 S. 6th Ave. (enter on 3rd Avenue).
According to the City of Tucson, residents can drop off HHW, electronic waste, paper documents for shredding (limit three boxes), recyclables, and glass bottles and jars at no cost with proof of address.
Notably, Unknown chemicals will not be accepted.
Residents from Marana, Oro Valley, Sahuarita, and unincorporated Pima County will be charged a $10 fee, according to the City of Tucson.
Tucson Parks and Recreation is hosting open houses at recreation centers across the city. Visitors can explore weight rooms, walking tracks, programs, events, game rooms, and public computers.
According to the City of Tucson, the first 100 attendees at each open house will receive a Parks and Recreation cooling towel, and there will be a raffle for a free universal pass, good for one year.
Upcoming open houses are at Oury Center, 655 N. Hughes St., on July 12 from 5-7 p.m., and El Rio Center, 1390 W. Speedway Blvd., on July 30 from 8 a.m.-8 p.m.
Reid Park Zoo’s Summer Safari Nights Continue
Reid Park Zoo offers evening visits with Summer Safari Nights. Each Saturday night features keeper chats, animal encounters, artifact stations, giraffe feedings, carousel rides, crafts, and games.
Additionally, each week has a different theme; this Saturday, July 13, from 6-8 p.m., the theme is "Slow & Steady: Reptiles Rule!"
