PHOENIX — Northbound Interstate 17 in north Phoenix will be closed this weekend for pavement improvement work, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT).
The closure will take place from 10 p.m. Friday, August 2, to 5 a.m. Monday, August 5, affecting I-17 between Happy Valley Road and Loop 303.
Drivers will be redirected onto westbound Happy Valley Road, northbound Lake Pleasant Parkway, and eastbound Loop 303 to rejoin I-17. The northbound on-ramps at Deer Valley and Pinnacle Peak roads will also be closed, according to ADOT.
“Using local streets can lead to significant delays and inconvenience,” ADOT spokesperson Jim Lewis said. “Our detour route, monitored by off-duty officers and project staff, is the most efficient option.”
Traffic is expected to be heavier on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Motorists should plan for potential traffic backups and consider traveling before the closure begins.
To assist with traffic flow, ADOT will implement local-only closures at neighborhood entrances near I-17 and station law enforcement officers at key intersections.
ADOT is also working to ensure navigation apps do not redirect drivers onto local roads. “Sticking to the detour route will help reduce delays for everyone,” Lewis added.
The pavement work is part of a larger project by ADOT to improve the road surface on six miles of I-17 between Happy Valley Road and State Route 74.
This includes removing old asphalt, replacing bridge deck joints, and diamond grinding to create a smoother, more durable surface.
Drivers are reminded that the speed limit within the work zone north of Anthem Way remains 65 mph.
