Boar's Head Provisions Co., Inc., is expanding its recall of deli meat products due to concerns over Listeria monocytogenes contamination, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

Initially reported on July 26, 2024, the expansion now includes approximately seven million additional pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products.

The FSIS warns that some of these products might still be in consumers’ refrigerators or on retail shelves.

Consumers who have purchased these items are advised not to eat them, while retailers should refrain from selling products with the specified sell-by dates.

Affected products should be discarded or returned to the point of purchase. The FSIS also urges consumers to thoroughly clean their refrigerators to prevent cross-contamination.

Whole genome sequencing confirmed that a liverwurst sample tested by the Maryland Department of Health was positive for the outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes.

The recalled products were distributed nationwide and feature establishment numbers “EST. 12612” or “P-12612” inside the USDA mark of inspection on the labels.

The FSIS is collaborating with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state health officials to investigate this multistate outbreak linked to deli-sliced meats.

As of July 30, 34 cases of listeriosis have been reported across 13 states, resulting in 33 hospitalizations and two deaths, according to FSIS.

The investigation remains ongoing, with the FSIS continuing to coordinate with the CDC and state partners. Updates will be posted on the CDC’s Food Safety Alert regarding the listeria outbreak associated with deli meats.

Listeriosis is a severe infection often caused by consuming food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. According to the CDC, approximately 1,600 people contract listeriosis annually, with about 260 fatalities.
