PHOENIX - Governor Katie Hobbs announced today the appointment of veteran legal expert Lee Stein to the Arizona Board of Regents, which oversees the state’s university system comprising Arizona State University (ASU), Northern Arizona University (NAU), and the University of Arizona (U of A).

The Board is made up of ten members, including two student members. The Governor appoints eight members to serve eight-year terms and two student members to staggered two-year terms.

Stein brings over 25 years of legal experience to his new role, including previous positions as an Assistant U.S. Attorney and a Special Assistant Attorney General in the Arizona Attorney General’s Office.

“Lee Stein’s extensive experience in advocating for accountability and transparency makes him an excellent fit for the Arizona Board of Regents," said Hobbs.

“His dedication to public service and respect for Arizona’s universities will be invaluable in ensuring that higher education remains accessible and maintains the high standards of our public institutions.”

Stein’s career is deeply rooted in Arizona. He has served on former Senator John McCain’s Federal Judicial Evaluation Committee, taught as an adjunct professor at ASU and the University of Arizona, and clerked for the Arizona Supreme Court.

He also served as partner and Co-Chair of Perkins Coie’s investigations and white-collar defense practice group, handling cases in healthcare regulation, fraud, internal investigations, and anti-corruption.

“I am honored by Governor Hobbs’ trust in me,” Stein said. “I recognize the vital role of higher education in our state and am eager to help ensure that our universities continue to provide accessible and high-quality education to all Arizona students.”

An Arizona native, Stein holds law degrees from the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at ASU and the University of Arizona.
