Pinch-hitter Lourdes Gurriel Jr. went 2-for-2 with 4 RBIs, leading the Arizona Diamondbacks (72-56) to a 10-8 win over the Miami Marlins (46-81) on Wednesday, completing a three-game sweep at loanDepot Park.
The ascending D-backs are 17-5 in their last 22 games since July 29.
Game Recap:
The Diamondbacks were jumpstarted by singles from Corbin Carroll and Joc Pederson, setting up Pavin Smith’s RBI sacrifice fly that gave them an early 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the first, after Xavier Edwards singled, Jake Burger drilled an 89.9-mph sinker over the left-center field fence for a two-run home run, giving the Marlins a 2-1 lead
The D-backs answered in the top of the third when Geraldo Perdomo belted his 14th double of the season. Jake McCarthy then golfed an 86-mph low and inside slider for a two-run homer, reclaiming the lead at 3-2.
Diamondbacks starter Jordan Montgomery (8-6, 6.44 ERA) appeared to struggle throughout the game, particularly in the fourth inning, where his off-speed location issues were costly.
He pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing 10 hits and 6 earned runs. Montgomery walked 1, struck out 4, and surrendered 2 home runs, throwing 88 pitches.
His pitch selection included 23 curveballs (26%), 22 changeups (25%), 21 sinkers (24%), and 22 fastballs (25%).
The Diamondbacks held a 3-2 lead entering the bottom of the fourth, but the Marlins capitalized, sending nine hitters to the plate and scoring four times to take a 6-3 lead.
Montgomery’s struggles were evident as he allowed several key extra-base hits.
Connor Norby singled on a 92-mph sinker, followed by Otto Lopez's RBI double off a 78-mph curveball, tying the game at 3-3.
Cristian Pache then launched a two-run homer on an 82.8-mph changeup, putting the Marlins ahead 5-3.
David Hensley added a single on a 92.9-mph four-seam fastball, and Xavier Edwards capped the rally with an RBI triple on an 81.2-mph curveball, making it 6-3.
In the top of the seventh, Carroll and Pederson both walked, setting up Josh Bell's RBI single that cut the Marlins' lead to 6-4. With two outs and the bases loaded, Gurriel Jr. delivered a clutch two-run double, giving the Diamondbacks a 7-6 lead.
In the top of the eighth, Perdomo added insurance with his second home run of the year, a towering solo shot to right field, extending the D-backs' lead to 8-6.
In the eighth, Joe Mantiply replaced Kevin Ginkel, who pitched a perfect seventh, and was welcomed by David Hensley’s single and Vidal Bruján's RBI double, cutting the D-backs' lead to 8-7.
With one out, Justin Martinez replaced Mantiply. He struck out Xavier Edwards looking and induced a Jake Burger ground out, preserving the one-run lead.
In the ninth, Jose Herrera’s RBI triple made it 9-7. Gurriel Jr.’s fourth RBI, a single to center, made it 10-7.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Marlins loaded the bases and a wild pitch by Martinez brought in Jesús Sánchez, cutting the lead to 10-8.
With two outs and the bases still loaded, Martinez struck out David Hensley to secure the victory.
Martinez (5-4, 1.79 ERA) earned the win after pitching 1 2/3 innings, allowing 1 run on 2 hits, with 1 walk and 4 strikeouts, throwing 31 pitches.
