PHOENIX - In a commanding performance, the New York Mets (69-63) erupted for six runs in the fifth inning, sending 12 batters to the plate and cruising to an 8-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks (75-57) on Tuesday at Chase Field.

D-backs starter Brandon Pfaadt (8-7, 4.31 ERA) struggled to find his rhythm, lasting 4 2/3 innings while surrendering eight hits and eight earned runs.

He struck out six, walked one, and threw 98 pitches in the losing effort.

Uncharacteristically, Pfaadt's pitch selection was led by his sweeper, which he threw 36% of the time.

    Game Recap

The Mets got off to a quick start, scoring two runs on two hits in the second inning.

Pete Alonso launched his 28th home run of the season, while J.D. Martinez walked, and Tyrone Taylor reached on an error by second baseman Kevin Newman, putting runners on the corners.

Jeff McNeil then grounded into a force out, bringing in Martinez and extending the Mets' lead to 2-0.

The Mets broke the game open in the fifth inning. McNeil doubled, Francisco Alvarez and Francisco Lindor each singled, followed by singles from Mark Vientos and Brandon Nimmo.

Jesse Winker then hit a sacrifice fly, bringing the score to 5-0.

After a Martinez single, Pfaadt was replaced by Jordan Montgomery, who hit Taylor to make it 6-0 and walked McNeil to increase the lead to 7-0.

Alvarez then reached on a fielding error by Geraldo Perdomo, extending the lead to 8-0.

Sean Manaea (10-5, 3.51 ERA) was dominant for the Mets over six innings, allowing just one hit while striking out 10 and issuing no walks on 86 pitches.

However, the Diamondbacks broke through in the bottom of the seventh, with Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Corbin Carroll each homering to cut the lead to 8-3.

Following Carroll’s 437-foot, two-run blast to right-center field, his 15th of the season, Reed Garrett replaced Manaea.

For the game, Manaea pitched 6 2/3 innings, giving up four hits and three earned runs while striking out 11 without issuing a walk. He threw 103 pitches.

In a bright spot during a tough game, Montgomery settled down after walking in a run, pitching 4 1/3 innings without allowing any more runs.

In relief, Montgomery gave up five hits, struck out two, and walked one, throwing 70 pitches in his outing.
