Faced with limited work options, asylum-seekers are starting businesses in Washington state
A s Adriana Figueira tries to get her new business off the ground, she’s also navigating the asylum-seeking process. Figueira, who’s from Venezuela, arrived at the southern border of the United States less than a year ago, asking federal officials for asylum from political persecution. Since then, Figueira has been living and organizing with other asylum-seekers in the Seattle area, getting to know them and learning about their previous lives. Her business idea is to connect other new immigrants to freelance work opportunities so they too can make a living. The plan is to help people tap into the skills they’ve already got. “We need to know their talents above all else — what they dedicated themselves to beforehand,” Figueira said.

SISKIYOU COUNTY, Calif. – The Donomore Fire was one of multiple fire starts caused by lightning strikes on the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest over the last two days. Oregon governor orders flags to half-staff in honor of late Senate President Peter Courtney
Gov. Tina Kotek ordered flags at Oregon public institutions to be flown at half-staff effective immediately until sunset on Thursday, July 18, in memory of the life and service of Peter Courtney, the former president of the Oregon State Senate and longest-serving state legislator in Oregon history. “President Courtney truly lived by example: he cared deeply for our state, for the people that he worked with, and above all, for his family with vigor, compassion and courage,” Kotek said in a written statement. “It was an honor to serve alongside him and I know his legacy will live on through his many efforts on behalf of Oregonians and in the memory of those who knew him.” Courtney died Tuesday, July 16. He was 81. Kotek’s office first announced the news that Courtney died of complications from cancer in his home, surrounded by family.

2024 Tribal Stewards participants get to work in eastern Oregon
Hands-on natural resources and restoration education program serving inter-tribal young adults. Oregon Natural Desert Association (ONDA) and Lomakatsi Restoration Project have announced the launch of the 2024 Tribal Stewards program, which brings together a nine-member inter-tribal crew to work on ecological restoration projects in Oregon’s high desert. Serving members of the Burns Paiute Tribe, Klamath Tribes, Shoshone-Paiute Tribes of Duck Valley Indian Reservation, and Pit River Tribe, the Tribal Stewards program is providing valuable natural resource field experience to support the growing restoration workforce in eastern Oregon.
