The Polk County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) reports that at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Friday, July 12, a 19-year-old named Henry Maynard caused a deputy-involved shooting in Winter Haven, Florida, at the Oakwood Estates neighborhood near Spirit Lake Road.

According to Sheriff Grady Judd, the whole incident began at the home of Maynard’s grandmother when she left a candy bar for him on his computer while he slept. When he woke up, this candy bar had melted, causing him to lose his temper.

Sheriff Judd states that Maynard rushed out of his grandmother’s house and ran eight-tenths of a mile to his parents’ house. Once there, Maynard collected a shoulder pack and a bag and took a car. The car was unregistered and Maynard was unlicensed.

Nevertheless, he drove the car back towards his grandmother’s home. Sheriff Judd says that when Maynard arrived at her house, the grandmother called Maynard’s parents to warn them about the situation and their son’s anger. His parents reportedly hurried over to her house.

In the meantime, Maynard called 911 to declare that he was about to commit a crime. Maynard then hit his grandmother with the car, “knocking her to the ground”, said Sheriff Judd in his initial report. From there, Maynard fled the scene.

Upon his arrival, the responding officer, 26-year-old Deputy Sheriff Christian Quattlebaum, spotted Maynard’s parents looking for Maynard in the direction the deputy was heading, so the deputy began turning around to search in the other direction. As Deputy Sheriff Quattlebaum turned, Maynard drove past his parents, accelerated to what Sheriff Judd is calling “a high rate of speed”, and t-boned the police vehicle.

He then got out of his car in what Sheriff Judd reports a witnessing neighbor says was “an absolute rage like a mad man”, proceeded to pry the driver’s side door off of the police vehicle, and got inside it. Deputy Sheriff Quattlebaum was attempting to escape his vehicle through the passenger’s side door when Maynard climbed into the vehicle and began attacking him.

In response to the assault, Deputy Sheriff Quattlebaum drew his firearm and shot Maynard. Maynard’s father began initiating CPR, but his efforts were unsuccessful. Maynard was ultimately pronounced deceased.

Deputy Sheriff Quattlebaum was taken to the hospital to have his injuries treated, and Maynard’s grandmother was rushed to the hospital by ambulance as an emergency case. As of 2:44 p.m. on July 13, the deputy was reported “not significantly injured”, and the grandmother was in a stable condition but did suffer a broken arm.

Sheriff Judd also noted that the PCSO felt “huge emotions” over this case. Henry Maynard’s mother, Doris Maynard, is a detention deputy of 10 years; his father is a nurse who works in the jail system, and one of his cousins is a deputy. In addition, this was not Maynard’s first violent criminal offense, as Sheriff Judd stated that he had previously been arrested for battery against a police officer.
