UNION, NJ - The Township of Union celebrated the Fourth of July with a bang on Thursday evening in Biertuempfel Park.

The night featured a live musical concert, a number of food trucks offering refreshments, and a fireworks spectacular to cap it off. Hundreds attended from the Union area and beyond, covering the park field and the hilltop beyond with lawn chairs and beach towels.

The group Mission Dance kicked things off and covered a number of popular tunes from across generations, including hits from Whitney Houston and Icona Pop. Attendees of all ages danced and sang along with the band as the sun began to set.

After a brief welcome and introduction from Mayor Manny Figueiredo and members of the Township Committee, singer Gail Freeman led the crowd in singing "The Star-Spangled Banner". Four Junior ROTC cadets from Union High School were also on hand to present the flag.

"It's so amazing to see the impressive turnout here tonight as we celebrate our nation's independence with this fireworks show," said Figueiredo. "This is what the Township of Union is all about."

Finally, the time had come for the fireworks to start. Set to a backdrop of light patriotic fanfare, bursts of color lit up the sky and captivated the onlookers for nearly half an hour.

Although there was a chance of rain in the forecast, it held off until just after the grand finale, to the relief of the crowd.

This year marks the 248th anniversary of the United States' independence. As the country gears up towards 2026, there are sure to be special celebrations to commemorate 250 years.
