Hello University City, Happy Memorial Day weekend. No matter what’s on your schedule this weekend, please keep in mind that Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, is a federal holiday in the United States for honoring and mourning the U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. From 1868 to 1970, it was observed on May 30. Since 1971, it is observed on the last Monday of May.

From the Plan University website: The University Community Plan serves as the 30-year vision for land use, mobility, urban design, public facilities and services, natural resources, historic and cultural resources, and economic development in the University Community Planning Area. This update plans more opportunities for homes, jobs and mixed-use development connected to the University of California San Diego, retail and employment centers, hospitals, health care facilities, residential areas, public spaces, and bus rapid and light rail stations.

Rose Canyon Tunnel Construction Begins Late May
Pure Water San Diego has issued a University City Construction Alert: Starting at the end of May, construction crews will begin clearing and grading the work area on the north side of the railroad tracks for the construction of the Rose Canyon Tunnel shaft, as outlined in environmental documents for the City of San Diego Morena Northern Pipelines and Tunnels project in University City.

One thing we, and the city, have learned is that the residents of University City pay attention to the issues that affect our neighborhood. Thanks to all who attended our UCCA meetings in person or watched online. And although the plan update comment deadline will have passed by the time you read this, thanks to all who did submit comments – let’s see what the city does with all of them.

UCCA President’s Message for April 2024 – It’s about the CPU
Hello University City, April has been jam packed with meetings…. Yes, yes…I know the month is almost over, but I did want to wait until we finished a few key meetings. The first weekend of April kicked off with an excellent “What You Need to Know” presentation by UCCA Secretary and UCPG Liaison Katie Rodolico about the University Community Plan Update released on March 14. Katie provided a well-researched and detailed discussion about the current plan proposal and what was and was not revised form the previous proposal. On Monday, April 22, University City Community Association (UCCA) presents the second in a series of One & One talks – one subject or speaker for one hour. Jemma Samala, UCCA’s president, will conduct a casual interview-style session with D6 Councilmember Kent Lee. If you have a question for CM Kent Lee that you would like Jemma to include in her interview, please send it to Jemma as soon as possible (hopefully by Sunday evening) at: jemmasamala@gmail.com.
