Chicago Bears defensive back Douglas Coleman III hospitalized

Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Chicago Bears defensive back Douglas Coleman III was hospitalized after being injured in the first half of the Bears' win over the Kansas City Chiefs in their preseason finale in Kansas City, Mo.

Coleman was hurt on the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter of the 34-21 victory Thursday at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. He did not return.

"When I was on the field, standing on the Chiefs sideline, he was moving his limbs," Bears coach Matt Eberflus told reporters. "He gave us a thumbs up. So that was really uplifting to our football team. I don't have anything more than that. He is at the hospital being evaluated."

Coleman was attempting to make a tackle on Chiefs wide receiver Cornell Powell during the play.

Backup quarterback Chris Oladokun started the play with a 9-yard pass to the wide receiver. Powell avoided an initial tackle from defensive back Ro Torrence. Coleman then came flying in and drilled Powell, forcing him to fall to the ground. The Bears' defender then remained on the ground.

Players from both teams gathered nearby as Coleman was placed on a stretcher and taken off the field.

Coleman played at Texas Tech from 2016 through 2019. He initially signed with the Denver Broncos , but was released before the 2020 NFL season. He then played for the Ottawa Redblacks from 2021 to 2023 in the Canadian Football League. The Bears signed Coleman in January.

Coleman is listed as a backup safety on the Bears' depth chart. The Bears will open the regular season with a game against the Tennessee Titans on Sept. 8 in Chicago.
