"No words," Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia said on X, along with a photo of the department's shield with a black band over it.

The Dallas Morning News first confirmed the death of the unnamed officer, who was discovered shot inside a patrol car in the city's Oak Cliff neighborhood.

Two responding officers located a suspect and engaged the man in a shootout at about 10 p.m. CDT.

Both officers were shot and injured during the exchange and taken to the hospital. Police department officials said Friday morning one officer was shot in the leg and is stable while the other was wounded in the head and remained in critical condition.

The suspect left the scene of the shooting in a vehicle, leading officers on a chase southbound along I-35E.

The man eventually stopped in Lewisville, around 25 miles from Dallas. He exited the vehicle while on the highway carrying a long gun and was shot and killed by police, closing the road for several hours.

Officials have not released the man's name.

"Our department is hurting," Dallas Police Department Communications Director Kristin Lowman told reporters at a Friday morning news conference.

"We have officers who are injured, who are in the hospital, and we lost one of our own. We ask tonight and this morning for the thoughts and prayers of our city, for not only those who are recovering in the hospital, but for our fallen, for their family and for their loved ones, and for us as a department as well."

Garcia is expected to provide an update and take questions during a news conference scheduled to take place at 5 p.m. CDT Friday at police headquarters.
