John Bambling Injured In a Mine; Covered With Coal — John Bambling met with an accident on Sandy Run late Saturday afternoon when he and Fred Rice were mining coal about four miles from Hopewell, Bedford County. The young men were working together. A fall of rock covered Rice completely and John Bambling sustained a broken arm. Bambling was able to extricate himself from the debris and drove his car to Hopewell to secure medical attention. He was later taken to the Roaring Spring Hospital where his fracture was reduced. The arm was very seriously mangled and it is thought that the physician will be unable to save it. Rice, who is 18 years of age, was able to get out before help reached the Ines. Their lamps were extinguished and everything was dark. Bambling thought his working partner had been killed and the persons who went to rescue were surprised to find him outside of the mine. Bambling is a popular fellow, plays on the Hopewell baseball team and is considered a star. He is a married man with several children. It was indeed a fortunate end of the unfortunate occurrence.
Rusty Allen Peck
Rusty Allen Peck was born in Big Pool, Maryland on June 29th, 1949, to the late Lawrence and Nora Shoemaker Peck. Rusty was the youngest of five children, He is survived by his brother Jame Peck, and wife Opal. He was preceded in death by his sisters Virginia Peck Baker, and Dorothy Peck Gorden, and his brother Harry Peck. Rusty passed on July 22nd, 2024, at Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, MD. Rusty lived with his elderly mother until February 1985 when he moved into his new home with the Washington County Human Development Council. Rusty attended the Washington County Human Development Council Day Program until October 2020 when he retired. Rusty loved racing cars and enjoyed going to the Hagerstown Speedway. He also enjoyed reading his newspapers, checking the mail daily, eating out, and visiting his close friends Tom Avey and Andrea Brown. He also enjoyed spending time with his friends Conway Sterling and Jay Seipler.Rusty will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and caregivers.
Mount Union 14U finishes second in VFW Tournament
The Mount Union 14U VFW Teener League team was on the road over the weekend taking part in the VFW State Tournament held at Schuylkill Haven Pennsylvania. The tournament started Saturday morning with four teams playing in for seeding for Sunday’s playoff games. Mount Union went 2-1 on Saturday with wins over Phillipsburg and Lebanon Valley falling to Schuylkill Valley in game three to end the day with a second seed.

Kitten recovering from head trauma after being kicked by Franklin Co. man
FRANKLIN COUNTY, Pa. (WHP) — Pennsylvania State Police are investigating after a kitten was rushed to an emergency vet for head trauma on July 10. According to an affidavit, Robert Clem, 75, of Greencastle has been charged with three counts of cruelty to animals after he allegedly kicked his girlfriend's kitten.
