Coroner IDs man killed Saturday in fatal wrong-way crash

URBANA — A Byron man was killed early Saturday morning after he was struck by a vehicle driving the wrong way on the road.

Justin L. Martinez, 25, was pronounced dead at the Carle Foundation Hospital Emergency Department at 1:57 a.m. Saturday, Champaign County Coroner Stephen Thuney said.

Preliminary information from the investigation showed that Mr. Martinez was driving north on North Cunningham Avenue near Triumph Drive in Urbana when a wrong-way driver collided with Mr. Martinez’s vehicle head on.

Mr. Martinez later died from his injuries after he was transported to the Urbana hospital.

An autopsy is scheduled for today.

The death is being investigated by the Illinois State Police and the Champaign County Coroner’s Office.
