URBANDALE, Iowa – A police standoff lasted hours before coming to an end Wednesday night when Urbandale police say the suspect took his own life.

The standoff started around 6:30 p.m. with a report of a domestic dispute at a home on 150th Street in Urbandale.

“Upon attempting to make contact with the other party, the officers heard gunfire come from within a residence which caused them to back off,” said Captain Chad Underwood with the Urbandale Police Department.

A large police response eventually ensued including a SWAT team and two ambulances. Officers shut down a portion of Douglas Avenue and positioned themselves behind their squad cars with guns drawn.

People living nearby were asked to remain in their homes.

Police attempted to use a drone to look in the windows of the home. Officers finally went into the home just before 11:00 p.m., where officers located the suspect’s body inside.

Police have not released the man’s name but are expected to release more information later Thursday morning.
