4 people shot on Virginia State University campus, suspects identified

Local and state police are investigating after four people were shot on Virginia State University ’s campus early Wednesday.

A Chesterfield County Police Department spokesperson told USA TODAY the shooting took place just after midnight near Daniel Gymnasium on the school's campus.

About 12:36 a.m., officers responded to a report of gunfire on Boisseau Street, where they found four people shot, according to a press release from the department.

All four were taken to a local hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

As of mid-Wednesday morning there was no further threat to the Virginia State community in connection to the shooting, police said.

Police have not yet released any identifying information about the four people who were shot.

Were the people shot at Virginia State University students?

A preliminary investigation indicated none of the victims were enrolled for the fall 2024 semester, police said

"Contrary to reports, no officers discharged their firearms during this incident," police wrote in the release.

Police have identified multiple suspects, and charges were pending, officials said.

A motive in the shooting was not immediately known. Virginia State Police are assisting in the investigation, police said.
