A Ferris wheel at a German music festival became engulfed in flames over the weekend, injuring more than 20 people, according to multiple reports.

The terrifying incident occurred around 9 p.m. on Aug. 17 at the Highfield Festival near Lake Störmthal in Grosspoesna, a municipality in Germany, Reuters and CNN reported, citing Saxony police.

It is unclear why the Ferris wheel caught fire, but the belief is the material under the ride sparked the flames and then passed on to the cable cars above it, police said, per Reuters.

Due to the fire, four people suffered burn wounds, while another was treated for injuries from falling, CNN reported, citing a statement from police. Police said 65 people received some form of medical treatment with 16 being hospitalized, according to the department, per Reuters. None of the injuries are considered life-threatening.

The Ferris wheel was cordoned off, and the event continued "operations as planned," Highfield Festival organizers said in a statement obtained by the Independent .

    'I’m absolutely shocked and upset'

The Ferris wheel caught fire while German rapper Ski Aggu performed onstage during the festival. He addressed the incident on Instagram stories and wrote that he was "shocked and upset."

Aggu also wrote in the Instagram story that he was told in his earpiece to "not cancel the show under any circumstances" and maintain dialogue with the crowd to prevent mass panic. The Highfield Festival is considered one of the biggest rock music events in the region, with up to 25,000 attendees.

"The priority was to prevent the situation from escalating any further. Fortunately, that worked," Aggu wrote.
