Bush, McCain, Romney alums endorse Harris

More than 200 Republicans who worked for either former President George W. Bush, the late Sen. John McCain or Sen. Mitt Romney endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president in an open letter Monday obtained exclusively by USA TODAY. The letter from alums of the three Republican presidential nominees before former President Donald Trump comes on the heels of a Democratic National Convention last week in Chicago that showcased Trump's Republican detractors. At least five former aides to former President George H.W. Bush also signed the letter, which has 238 signatures in all. ✍️ Here's everything we know.

    A grim heat record

As the planet gets warmer, heat-related deaths are increasing in the U.S., according to a new study that looked at federally reported data since 1999. More Americans died from heat in 2023 than any year in over two decades of records, according to the findings published Monday. Last year was also the globe's hottest year on record, the latest alarming milestone in a warming trend fueled by climate change. 🔎 More findings from the study.

#️⃣ By the numbers: The American Medical Association journal study found that 2,325 people died from heat in 2023. Researchers say that number is likely an undercount.

    Hawaii stares down 2 hurricanes

Emergency crews worked to restore power and survey damage Monday after Hurricane Hone lashed the Big Island of Hawaii even as forecasters tracked Hurricane Gilma in the eastern Pacific. Before weakening into a tropical storm late Sunday, Hone moved south of the Big Island as a Category 1 hurricane, dumping over a foot of rain across portions of the island and up to 18 inches in some areas.

All eyes on Gilma: A Category 2 storm more than 1,200 miles east of Hilo, Hawaii, Hurricane Gilma is forecast to bring thunderstorms and gusty winds to the state as early as Tuesday night or Wednesday morning, AccuWeather said. 👉 See the latest on the storm.

As the fall term begins at many colleges, administrators are preparing for another possible surge in campus activism. The last school year ended acrimoniously as anti-war protests persisted on many school grounds, some leading to police crackdowns, canceled graduation ceremonies and academic sanctions against participants. And as young activists prepare to ramp up the momentum again, harsher rules may await them. 👉 We break it down.
