More than 20 schools across the nation have been impacted by gun violence since the start of 2024, with a Georgia high school becoming the latest K-12 campus to contend with firearm related deaths and injuries.

Four people were killed and nine others were injured after a school shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder , an Atlanta suburb, on Wednesday morning, which was the 23rd time this year this year a school shooting has resulted in injuries or deaths, according to data compiled by Education Week , a news organization that covers K-12 education.

Education Week is just one of multiple organizations that compiles data about gun violence in schools, but unlike the National Gun Violence Archive or K-12 School Shooting Database , they only track incidents that fulfill a certain criteria:

    • Reported incidents where a firearm was discharged
    • Where any individual, other than the suspect or perpetrator, has a bullet wound resulting from the incident
    • Occurred on K-12 school property or on a school bus
    • Occurred while school is in session or during a school-sponsored event

With those factors in mind, 2023 had 38 school shootings - 15 more than in 2024 so far, including the Georgia shooting Wednesday.

There have been approximately 205 school shootings since Education Week began to track school shootings in 2018.

How many school shootings have been reported in 2024?

The 22 school shootings prior to Wednesday's in Georgia have resulted in seven deaths and 29 injuries, according to Education Week's tally. Of the seven fatalities, three were students or children while four were school employees or adults.

Including Wednesday's fatalities and injuries, 49 people have been killed or injured as a result of a school shooting in 2024, with 11 deaths and 38 injuries.

Here are the total number of people, including children and adults, who were either killed or injured in a school shooting since 2018:

    • 2024: 49 people have either been injured/killed in 23 school shootings
    • 2023: 63 people have either been injured/killed in 38 school shootings

When and where did the other school shootings occur this year?

Education Week's list of school shootings reported in 2024 so far includes incidents that have occurred on K-12 campuses across the country that have either resulted in the death or injury of an individual by a firearm.

While all of the incidents reported did occur at a K-12 school site, not every school shooting recorded put the lives of students, teachers, or staff at risk. Some of these incidents, including those reported in New Mexico or Oregon, occurred after-hours.
